Who He Is
Gravity-type. The event of Awakening Day — gravity appears maybe once a decade at a given academy. He's from Thornwall, which means old-money background, but he doesn't carry it the way Cassiel or Orlen do. He's genuinely warm, genuinely curious, and genuinely dangerous to be around if you're hiding something, because his questions are accurate without being aggressive.
His younger sister Wren (14 at story start) has progressive neurological degeneration. The Menders' Circle can slow it but not cure it. Roughly five years remaining without intervention. The guild — under Sorel's direction — controls access to the best treatment. Dorian's cooperation is the price of Wren's care. He has never refused a guild assignment. He has never made trouble. He has been, quietly and completely, available.
Voice
Warm. Genuinely curious. Draws people toward him without effort. Dangerous because he means everything he says.
"Ashen Absorption," Dorian said. He had looked it up — of course he had. "Nobody's written about it in the literature."
"No."
"That's interesting."
"Is it."
"Don't you think so?"
Why Riven Is Careful Around Him
Dorian's warmth is not performance. It is genuine. Genuine warmth from someone you know will be used as a tool by the most powerful person alive is not easy to manage. Riven cannot tell Dorian the truth about Sorel's leverage — not yet. What he can do, eventually, is develop healing capability and cure Wren properly. This removes Sorel's leverage entirely.
Arc
- V1: Classmate. New acquaintance from Thornwall. Finds Riven interesting. Wren's illness mentioned. One of the Ashline Five — goes to the Ashline out of genuine curiosity about what Riven is doing there.
- V2: Sorel's grip becomes visible — guild assignments, managed treatment access.
- V3: TBD
- V4: Riven heals Wren. The leverage is gone. Dorian becomes a genuine ally — the first person Riven helps with no tactical calculation.
- V5: Fights alongside Riven. Gravity ability has direct utility in the barrier stabilisation. He survives.
What He Represents
The person Riven cannot keep at arm's length because Dorian's interest is not conditional. He is also the proof that Sorel's control is personal, not just institutional — Sorel uses a sick child to keep a teenager cooperative.
