Schools & Awakening — Greyveil Region
The Five Schools
Students attend primary school. At 17, all 17-year-olds from all five schools gather for Awakening Day. School loyalties exist but aren't rigid — people make friends across school lines.
1. Thornwall
Named after the Thornwall founding family. Rayana Thornwall is from this bloodline — S-rank exile, living near the Ashline while kids attend a school carrying her ruined family's name. Old money, discipline, tradition, stone buildings, uniforms, legacy admissions. Inner Greyveil, near the old district.
2. Millhaven
Working class. Factory and rail workers' children. No pretension. Riven and Maria grew up here. Southern Greyveil, near the mills and rail yards.
3. Ashford
Rural. Farming families, some retired hunter lineages. Eastern outskirts, nearest the Ashline. Fen Carrow and Della Marsh are from here. Kids grow up near the grey-soiled fields and the folk stories about cursed land.
4. Crestmont
Merchant families. New wealth, ambition. Competitive, status-conscious. Petra Cress is from here. Northern Greyveil, commercial district.
5. Harrowfield
Smallest. Mixed — guild admin families, rail workers, families that don't fit elsewhere. Edge of town. Nobody notices Harrowfield until a Harrowfield student does something.
Awakening Day
All 17-year-olds from the five schools gather at a guild-operated facility. One by one, the instrument activates the latent mark. Everyone awakens. No exceptions, no failed awakenings, no walk home. The drama is type, not success: Lightning gets applause, Gravity gets gasps, Decay gets silence and a half-step back from the people nearest.
The mechanism: The instrument reads the latent mark, the mark manifests visibly (lightning sparks, gravity makes the room heavier, fire flares), the student is recorded as F-rank of that type. Rank is earned from there — the instrument does not assess strength, only confirms type.
Riven's storage mechanic: Not for use on Awakening Day — nothing separates here, because no one fails to awaken. Riven can grab masterless marks from dead creatures and fallen hunters in the field and hold them unintegrated. Limit ~3–5 stored at once before his own lightning mark begins to stutter under the internal pressure. Integration takes time, effort, concentration. Failure = that mark disperses and is lost. See mark-mechanics.md for the full storage and filtration system.
Post-awakening: Every student enters Greyveil Academy for a five-year program. Year 1 is general curriculum shared by hundreds of students per cohort. An advanced class of ~34 emerges by mid-Year 1, identified by instructors for accelerated training. At the end of Year 1, the advanced class formally separates from the main cohort — different schedule, different instructors, different expectations. Everyone knows who's in it. Years 2–3 run on two tracks: the advanced class under intensified training, the general cohort continuing standard curriculum. Year 3 ends with Finals. Years 4–5 specialize further: guild-track (combat, contract, field) for students who qualify, and vocational track (trade, civic, medical) for everyone else. C-rankers can choose either.
