Expression Atlas — The Ashen Rank

Every ability traceable to real physics. No expression exists "because it sounds cool." Each one derives logically from its base principle.

Known Rank Holders

This section is the single source of truth for who holds what rank. Any sensory, narrative, or planning doc that names a rank holder must match this list. Update this first when a new rank is revealed or confirmed in canon.

Hard rules this section enforces:

  1. At story start, SSS is historical only. No living SSS of any expression exists in V1 through V4. Riven becomes the first living SSS in the current era during V5's climax, as the culmination of his absorption arc — absorbing the critical barrier accumulation pushes him past S and SS and onto the scale that has been empty for two hundred years. Until that moment, no in-world character may be written as an SSS practitioner. The SSS entries throughout this doc describe the shape of the ceiling, not a cast member.
  2. SS is publicly extinct. Only Sorel is a living SS in confirmed canon. Any other living SS must be explicitly approved and added to this list before it appears in any other doc.
  3. S-rank is the public ceiling and is plural. Multiple living S-ranks exist across the guild; name them only as story requires.
  4. Riven's dual ability (Lightning + Ashen Absorption) is unique. Do not give any other character a second expression without explicit decision.
  5. Maria is Nuclear/Radiation, filed as Decay. Do not let any in-world voice correctly identify her type until the story reveals it.

The Six Bases

The mark system taps into six fundamental physical principles. Nobody in the world knows these bases exist — people know their specific ability (lightning, fire, gravity). Riven discovers the underlying structure through Ashen Absorption.

1. ELECTROMAGNETISM — 9 Expressions

The physics: The force between charged particles. Governs electricity, magnetism, all electromagnetic radiation (the entire spectrum from radio to X-ray), chemical bonds, and bioelectricity. The most diverse force at the human scale — which is why it has the most expressions. This isn't bloat. EM actually does all this.

Fire Thermal excitation — accelerating molecular motion via EM energy input. Combustion, sustained heat, flame production. Tier 2-3. Common, respected, not special. Tomas, Orlen, Corvin, Brin, Cal
Ice Thermal extraction — decelerating molecular motion, pulling kinetic energy from matter. The inverse of Fire, same base. Tier 2-3. Rarer than Fire. Mira, Asha
Light Visible-spectrum EM radiation — photon generation and manipulation. Illumination, blinding, focused beams, bending light paths. Tier 3. Dismissed as utility. Elise
Healing Bioelectric manipulation — accelerating cellular repair through electrical signaling. The body runs on ion channels, nerve impulses, membrane potentials. This is EM at the biological scale. Tier 3. Essential, not glamorous. Lina, Petra, Della
Transmutation Chemical bond rearrangement — restructuring molecular bonds to change material properties. Lead stays lead (that's nuclear), but its structure changes. Hardening, softening, altering conductivity, making alloys. Tier 2-3. Industrial value. Nara
Poison Targeted chemical disruption — introducing or catalyzing molecular reactions that corrupt biological chemistry. Not general disorder (Entropy). Specific, surgical biochemical sabotage. Tier 4. Stigmatized. Jess
Magnetism Magnetic field manipulation — attraction, repulsion, electromagnetic shielding. Persistent fields that pull, push, deflect, and grip. Moving metal is the obvious use. Deflecting incoming EM-based attacks is the terrifying one. Tier 2. Rare, respected.
Plasma Sustained ionization — creating and controlling the fourth state of matter. Not a bolt (Lightning) or a flame (Fire). Superheated ionized gas that persists, clings, and cuts. The surface of a star in miniature. Tier 1. Extremely rare. May be misidentified as Fire or Lightning at F-rank.

2. MOMENTUM — 9 Expressions

The physics: Newton's laws. Conservation of momentum. Mechanical energy — force, motion, pressure transfer, kinetic exchange. If Electromagnetism governs what things are at the atomic level, Momentum governs what things do at the human level.

Kinetic Redirection Momentum vector manipulation — receiving a force and returning it on a different axis. Not blocking. Not absorbing. Redirecting. Tier 2. Rare, highly tactical. Daven
Shockwave Rapid mechanical energy discharge — concussive pressure released as a radial or directed blast. The punch that doesn't need to connect. Tier 2-3. Flashy. Jonas
Sound Pressure waves through fluid media — audible, infrasonic, ultrasonic. Directional pressure blasts, sensory overload, echolocation. The medium is air. Tier 3. Niche, underestimated. Wynn
Seismic Mechanical oscillation through solid matter — ground vibration, structural resonance, tremors. Every structure has a resonant frequency. Find it, match it, and the building eats itself. Tier 2. Rare. Terrifying in urban environments.
Pressure Atmospheric/hydraulic pressure manipulation — compressing or expanding ambient pressure differentials. Creating vacuums, crushing with air weight, implosions. Not Wind (directed flow). Pressure is the state of the medium, not its motion. Tier 2. Rare.
Inertia Resistance to change in motion — making an object impossible to move, or impossible to stop. Not Strength (force output). Inertia manipulates the property itself. Touch a thrown spear and make it unstoppable. Tier 2. Extremely niche, extremely dangerous.

3. GRAVITY — 1 Expression

The physics: Mass warps spacetime. Objects with mass attract. At human scale: weight, falling, crushing force. At high rank: space curvature, gravitational lensing, tidal forces.

Gravity Gravitational field manipulation — increasing, decreasing, or redirecting gravitational pull. Doesn't diversify. Intensifies. F-rank: heavier/lighter in a small area. S-rank: bending light, tidal forces across a single body, pinning squads to the ground. Tier 1. Once a decade at an academy. Dorian

The rarity isn't artificial. Gravity is cosmically weak — it takes an entire planet to produce 1g. For a human mark to tap it meaningfully is extraordinary. Every Gravity user who has ever lived is remembered by name.


4. NUCLEAR — 3 Expressions

The physics: The strong nuclear force — the most powerful force in nature at short range. Holds atomic nuclei together against electromagnetic repulsion. When the grip holds: absolute stability. When it doesn't: the most violent energy releases in physics.

Two sides of one coin. The stable nucleus and the unstable one.

Stability Nuclear binding energy applied to the body — the strong force holding structure together against forces that should break it. Not toughness. Not endurance. The fundamental force that says this does not come apart. Tier 3. Identified as "Durability" by the guild. Valued as a tank type. Breck, Owen
Radiation Nuclear emission — unstable nucleus shedding energy. Gamma rays, particle radiation. Invisible or near-invisible. Things break down. Burn without flame. Degrade without rot. Misidentified. Guild has no category. Classified as Decay at F-rank. Maria (classified as Decay)
Fusion Nuclear compression — forcing binding events. Creating bonds at the atomic level. Where Stability holds, Fusion creates. Compression, merging, fusing. Energy release from successful fusion dwarfs anything except Radiation. Tier 1. Extraordinarily rare. May not currently exist in the living population.

5. ENTROPY — 3 Expressions

The physics: The second law of thermodynamics. Disorder increases. Energy dissipates. Every organized structure moves toward equilibrium. Entropy isn't a force — it's the direction. Everything falls apart. These users accelerate that direction.

Decay Accelerating material entropy — organic matter rots, metal corrodes, stone crumbles, living tissue degrades. The universal direction of disorder, aimed and accelerated. Tier 4. Stigmatized. People step back. Soraya
Nullification Energy suppression — forcing active energy states toward equilibrium. Dampening abilities, collapsing sustained mark effects, draining active fields. The anti-mark. Fire goes cold. Gravity flattens. Lightning grounds itself. Tier 4. More than stigmatized — feared. Guild monitors every one.
Stasis Enforced equilibrium — locking a system at its current energy state. Not time-stop (Spacetime). Thermodynamic stop. All energy exchange ceases. At S-rank: a zone where nothing works — no marks, no reactions, no metabolism. The universe's end state, locally. Tier 3-4. Extremely rare. Historically confused with Spacetime.

6. SPACETIME — 3 Expressions

The physics: The fabric of reality. Einstein's general relativity. Space and time are one manifold, and it can be warped, folded, stretched, and pierced. Spacetime users don't move through space faster (that's Speed). They change what space itself is doing.

Displacement Spatial translation — moving a point in space to another point. No path, no duration. The body leaves one point and arrives at another. Tier 1. Rarest overall.
Distortion Spatial warping — stretching, compressing, or bending the geometry of space. A ten-meter corridor becomes a hundred. A thirty-meter gap becomes one. Tier 1. May not currently exist in living population.
Rift Spatial severance — cutting through the fabric of space. A wound, not a connection. At low rank: an edge sharper than anything physical. At high rank: tearing open passages. Tier 1. Historical only. Guild would kill to control this.

Time manipulation does NOT exist as an expression. The mark system interfaces with spatial dimensions only. Riven's regression was a specific confluence of physical conditions — not an ability, not replicable on command. Time is off the table.
